Literacy NOW Tutoring
Victory Ministries collaborates with Cassady Alternative Elementary School and Westerville Community United Church of Christ to provide reading tutoring for 1st and 2nd grade students. Victory Ministries currently provides 27 adult volunteers committed to tutor the same student one lunch hour every week from October through May. Each adult tutor is required to complete a background check and receives tutoring training provided by the school. The school identifies the students most in need of reading tutoring and matches them with a volunteer tutor. This program isn’t about tutoring in a generic sense, but instead it’s about developing and working with children to read while loving it at the same time. Many of the children in this neighborhood are afraid of making mistakes and reluctant to read out loud, but after building a relationship with their tutor, they have the foundation to progress without the fear of failure. Research has shown that children who are nurtured by an unrelated, caring adult are less likely to skip school and less likely to begin drug and alcohol use. They are more likely to achieve better grades, get along better with their peers and to raise their personal goals. This program offers a child the support to overcome the daily hurdles they face in life and in reading one day at a time.
